In yet another move that underscores the ongoing, bipartisan lack of anything resembling representative government in the U.S., the Senate caved to the lobbyists yesterday and approved of warrantless wiretapping of American citizens, past, present and future.
Angry about this, but unsure what to do? If you need the advice of a guy who writes thrillers, it’s really pretty simple.
First, get mad. Read up on this legislation, follow the money, and make your own decision on who your elected representatives are really listening to when they make these unbelievable decisions.
Second, get involved with your government. If these people see no reason to actually stand for something and keep their promises, they’ve proven time and again that they’ll sell us out at every opportunity. Write to them, call their offices, and let them know (calmly and intelligently) what you elected them to do.
Third, raise your voice and vote, at all levels, in every election. Amazingly, the Democrats and Republicans were in lock-step with this latest assault on our liberties. Both John McCain (by voting yes) and Hillary Clinton (by not voting at all) endorsed it; so much for the vigorous two-party Presidential debate on this vital issue. Here’s how the rest of the Senators cast their ballots. If you don’t approve of the quality of your representation, vote to replace these public servants at your very next opportunity to do so.
It’s not too late, but I’m afraid it’s going to be too late before long if we don’t stand up and be heard. Tell them what you would have them do, about the war, the economy, the borders, whatever issues are closest to your heart. And if they’re not listening, cast your vote to send them home.
